In another dimension, identical to this universe in all of the ways we cannot see and divergent in all of the ways we can, humans are born fused with each other. Their bodies are thoroughly entangled: twenty toes masquerading as ten, torsos joined from hip to shoulder, necks twined so that their faces gaze in opposite directions. These people spend their lifetimes attempting to slip away, to tear themselves apart from their mates so that they need no longer be so uncomfortably whole.
If you walked into this dimension, it would all look very erotic, but it's really not so different from ours. We all want whatever we don't have, after all.
